Did you know...........

  • Xmas is not a new text speak shortening of Christmas it has been around since the 16th Century. Christmas comes from the two words 'Christ's mass', in Greek the first letter of Christ is X 'chi'.

  • The twelve days of Christmas start on Christmas day and end on the 5th of January. The 6th of January is Epiphany, the day the three kings brought their gifts to the baby Jesus.

  • The tradition of having a Christmas tree in the house is believed to have started in Germany in the 18th Century
  • On Christmas day in 1914 the German soldiers and the Allies called a truce which lasted a few days. They shared food, sang carols and played a game of soccer before going back to the trenches.

  • Boxing day gets its name from the tradition of the churches putting out their collection boxes on this day to collect for the poor.

  • The Christmas colors are traditionally red and green. Red represents the blood of Christ and green the evergreen tree or eternal life.

  • Christmas decorations are usually taken down on the Twelth Night, January the 5th.

  • Tree ornaments are often given as gifts and can be passed on through generations of families.
